Lectures, Retreats and Workshops

Susan no longer travels around the country to deliver one or two-day lectures and workshops. However, she will consider longer bookings by enquiry, particularly retreats or residential courses where there is time for students to develop ideas more fully.
These sessions are most suitable for groups, studios, colleges or retreat venues looking for thoughtful, process-led teaching rooted in textiles, drawing, observation and personal creative development.

Lectures
Lectures may be available as part of a longer retreat, residential course or special event.
Available lecture subjects include:
This Wonderful Life
Susan’s life and work in textiles.
Keeping the Magic
Susan’s process, working methods and the influences that have shaped her textile life.
Collaborations
Working with other artists for mutual benefit.

Retreats & Longer Workshops
Susan offers a number of workshops suitable for three or four-day retreats, or longer residential courses.
Looking Through
Using a limited field of vision, students develop observed work in sketchbooks before moving ideas into stitch, three-dimensional work or textiles in the broadest sense. Exercises are given each day to help students progress their own individual work.
Walking
An exploration of the immediate surroundings of the venue through focused observation and interpretation. Students work outside with guidance, then develop their findings through sketchbooks and, on longer courses, into textile work. Instruction and new exercises are given throughout.
Shoebox Academy
Students curate their own small collection before attending the course. During the retreat they record and respond to that collection through photography, drawing, printmaking and visual documentation, before moving into stitch, by hand and free machine if time allows. For enquiries about retreats, residential teaching or lecture bookings, please contact Susan directly to discuss suitability, availability and format.
